3D CAD
modelling has application for the road, civil engineering and
construction environment. We create models that can be used for a variety
of purposes throughout the project life cycle, especially to generate
powerful photorealistic visualisations of highways, tunnels (BD78/99),
lighting, traffic, traffic management, CCTV surveillance, electronic and
static roadsigns and other highway items of
interest. The resulting CAD models can also be used for other purposes:
- drawing &
document management systems
- contract tendering
- internet web display
- exhibition / powerpoint
kiosk display
- meeting / conference room display on LCD / Plasma
- corporate / business reception display on LCD /
Plasma

For
larger schemes, we can obtain appropriately scaled ordnance survey maps
with which a contoured landform model is created as illustrated on Contoured OS
Landform Model. Crude block representations of highway objects and
associated buildings can be inserted into 3D CAD models to provide
results which, even at this conceptual stage, provide powerful images
that provide a platform conveying scale and purpose providing a medium
for further creative inspiration and ideas.
It should
be noted that ordnance survey maps are not always an essential starting
point. It is possible to use client existing 2D drawings and use these
together with survey data to
generate the required 3D CAD model. We have motorway field experience of
collating motorway survey data, including street furniture, lighting and
communications equipment using EDM and GPS.
To
develop and enhance the model a stage further, we then replace block
representations, with 3D CAD models of road construction, objects (such
as trees, street furniture, safety fencing, vehicles) and further local
topographical survey data as
required. This is an iterative process and once finalised, the model and
resulting 4D CAD animation can be rendered to incorporate
the required material and textures.
